Personal Development at St Andrew's

Personal Development

At St Andrew's CE Primary School, personal development is at the heart of everything we do. Guided by our vision to Achieve, Believe, Care Together, we are committed to nurturing the whole child so that every pupil flourishes academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually within our distinctly Christian community.

We believe that education is about far more than academic success. Through our Christian ethos and values, we help children to grow into compassionate, confident and responsible individuals who are ready to make a positive contribution to the world around them. We encourage all children to develop resilience, independence and a strong sense of self-worth so that they leave St Andrew’s prepared for the opportunities and challenges of modern life.

Our curriculum and wider school experiences provide rich opportunities for pupils to discover their talents, interests and aspirations. We promote equality of opportunity for all children and ensure that every pupil, including those who may be disadvantaged, is encouraged and supported to achieve their full potential.

Personal development at St Andrew’s includes:

  • Developing children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural understanding through our Christian values and collective worship.
  • Promoting positive mental health, emotional wellbeing and healthy lifestyles.
  • Encouraging children to become active, respectful and responsible citizens who understand the importance of kindness, service and compassion.
  • Providing leadership opportunities where pupils can develop confidence, responsibility and independence.
  • Celebrating diversity and teaching children to value and respect different faiths, cultures and beliefs.
  • Enriching learning through educational visits, clubs, sporting events, music, performance and community involvement.
  • Supporting children to build strong relationships, show empathy and care for others.

We want every child at St Andrew’s to feel valued, safe and inspired. By working together with families, the church and the wider community, we create an environment where children can truly flourish, achieving their best, believing in themselves and caring deeply for others.

St Andrew's 50 Things

At St Andrew's we want our children to understand, experience and learn to enjoy those simple things that get taken for granted, but that stay in our hearts forever.

We provide experience days and residential activities to all our children in order to broaden their horizons and allow them to better understand the world around them.

These activities include performing on a stage, growing something and eating it and exploring rockpools.

Each class builds up a scrapbook detailing the 50 things activities completed during their time at St Andrew's - a bank of memories to look back on and enjoy!

Active Hope

At St Andrew's CE Primary School, we believe that learning beyond the classroom plays an important role in helping children to grow in confidence, resilience and teamwork. As part of our commitment to personal development, pupils in Years 3 and 4 work alongside Active Hope, a Christian charity dedicated to providing high-quality outdoor and adventurous experiences for children and young people across the local area.

In Year 3, pupils take part in a series of sessions within school that focus on team building, communication and problem-solving skills. Through fun and engaging activities, children learn how to work collaboratively, support one another and persevere when faced with challenges. These experiences help to build confidence, strengthen friendships and encourage children to live out our school vision to Achieve, Believe, Care, Together.

In Year 4, pupils extend these experiences through a two-day outdoor adventure programme. One of these days is spent in the forest environment, where children take part in activities such as den building, teamwork challenges and survival skills. These sessions encourage children to develop independence, resilience and respect for the natural world while also deepening their understanding of cooperation and trust.

Through our partnership with Active Hope, children are given opportunities to step outside their comfort zones, try new experiences and flourish socially, emotionally and spiritually within a safe and supportive Christian environment.

Bikeability

In Year 5, pupils take part in Bikeability training, helping them to develop the skills and confidence needed to cycle safely and responsibly on today’s roads. Through practical sessions led by qualified instructors, children learn essential road safety, bicycle handling and awareness skills while also developing independence and responsibility. Bikeability encourages pupils to lead active, healthy lifestyles and supports our vision to Achieve, Believe, Care,Together by building confidence, resilience and respect for others within the wider community.

Residentials

At St Andrew's CE Primary School, residential experiences are a key part of our commitment to personal development, helping children to grow in independence, resilience and confidence within a safe and supportive environment.

In Year 2, pupils visit Crosby Hall Outdoor Education Centre, where they take part in a range of exciting activities such as low ropes, zip line, pottery, curling and pizza making. These experiences are carefully designed to build early independence, teamwork and self-belief.

In Year 5, children take part in a further residential experience, which has recently included visits to Willersley Castle and Winmarleigh Hall, with a future trip planned to Robinwood Activity Centre. During these stays, pupils engage in a wide range of adventurous activities such as canoeing, climbing, abseiling and problem-solving challenges, all of which help them to develop resilience, teamwork, leadership and a strong sense of achievement.

Hopes and Dreams Week

At St Andrew's CE Primary School, our Hopes and Dreams Week is a special part of our curriculum designed to inspire children to think positively and ambitiously about their future. Rooted in our vision to Achieve, Believe, Care Together, the week encourages pupils to reflect on their strengths, interests and aspirations, and to understand how their choices today can shape their future opportunities.

Throughout the week, children explore a wide range of careers and life pathways, meeting visitors and taking part in activities that help them to see the many possibilities open to them. They are encouraged to consider how their effort, attitude to learning, behaviour and determination all play an important role in achieving their goals and succeeding in later life.

Hopes and Dreams Week helps pupils to develop confidence, resilience and self-belief, while also raising aspirations for all children, including those who may need additional encouragement to see what they are capable of achieving. It supports our Christian ethos by reminding children that they are uniquely valued and that with perseverance and a positive mindset, they can flourish and make a meaningful contribution to the world around them.

After School Clubs

At St Andrew’s CE Primary School, we are proud to offer a wide range of after-school clubs that provide children with opportunities to explore their interests, develop new skills and enjoy learning beyond the classroom. Our clubs are designed to support our vision to Achieve, Believe, Care, Together by encouraging every child to take part, try new experiences and grow in confidence within a supportive and inclusive environment.

Children can take part in a variety of sporting clubs including gymnastics, football, multisports, athletics, cricket and handball, helping them to develop physical skills, teamwork and a love of being active. We are also fortunate to work with a specialist sports coach who supports the delivery of high-quality sporting opportunities, inspiring children to develop their skills, confidence and enthusiasm for physical activity and healthy lifestyles. Alongside sport, we offer a rich variety of enrichment opportunities such as wellbeing group, ethos club, eco club, gardening club, choir and crochet, allowing children to develop creativity, mindfulness, leadership and a sense of responsibility for themselves, others and the wider world.

These clubs play an important role in nurturing children’s talents and interests while also promoting friendship, resilience and enjoyment of school life. Through participation, pupils build confidence, discover new passions and develop important life skills that support their overall personal development and wellbeing.

Visits and Visitors

At St Andrew’s CE Primary School, we believe that learning extends far beyond the classroom. Educational visits and visitors play an important role in enriching our curriculum, bringing learning to life and providing children with memorable experiences that inspire curiosity, reflection and enjoyment. These opportunities support our vision to Achieve, Believe, Care, Together by helping children to explore the wider world, deepen their understanding and develop confidence through new experiences.

Throughout their time at St Andrew’s, children have the opportunity to take part in a range of educational visits linked closely to their learning across the curriculum. These may include visits to places such as the beach to support Geography learning, historical sites including Burtonwood Airbase, and places of worship such as Liverpool Cathedral to enhance children’s understanding of Christianity through Advent and Easter workshops. Younger children have also enjoyed visits to outdoor learning environments such as RHS Garden Bridgewater and seasonal experiences within the local community. Some pupils have also had the opportunity to attend important community events, including remembrance services at Halliwell Jones Stadium.

We also welcome a variety of visitors into school who help to enrich children’s understanding of the world around them. Visitors such as the fire service, police officers and guide dog representatives provide valuable opportunities for children to learn about safety, responsibility, diversity and the important roles people play within our communities. Children have also benefited from hands-on learning experiences, including visits from Animals Takeover, where Year 1 pupils were able to study and interact with a variety of animals as part of their Science learning. These experiences help children to ask questions, develop respect for others and gain real-life insight into different professions, services and the natural world.

Through educational visits and visitors, our pupils develop confidence, curiosity and cultural awareness while creating lasting memories that support both their academic learning and personal development.

Junior Safety Officers

Our Junior Safety Officers play an important role in promoting safety across the school and helping children understand how to keep themselves and others safe. They regularly share important safety updates during assemblies, raising awareness of topics such as road safety, online safety and personal wellbeing in a child-friendly and engaging way. The team also organise fun competitions and activities that encourage pupils to remember key safety messages, helping to build a strong culture of responsibility and care throughout the school community.
