Promoting British Values at Our School
At our school, we are committed to preparing children for life in modern Britain by actively promoting the fundamental British Values of:
- Democracy
- The Rule of Law
- Individual Liberty
- Mutual Respect
- Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs
We believe these values are essential in helping our pupils grow into respectful, responsible and active members of society.
Our Half-Term Focus
Each half term, we place a special focus on one British Value so that children can explore it in depth through meaningful experiences. This may include assemblies, class discussions, themed lessons, pupil voice activities, enrichment opportunities and real-life applications across the curriculum.
By focusing on one value at a time, children develop a deeper understanding of what it means and how it applies to their own lives, both in school and in the wider community.
Learning Through Experience
We know that values are best understood when they are experienced, not just taught. Our pupils are given opportunities to:
- Vote and share their opinions through school councils and class decisions (Democracy)
- Understand the importance of rules and fairness in school and society (Rule of Law)
- Make choices and develop independence in a safe environment (Individual Liberty)
- Show kindness, respect and empathy towards others (Mutual Respect)
- Learn about and celebrate different cultures, faiths and beliefs (Tolerance)
These experiences help children develop confidence, a sense of belonging and an appreciation for diversity.
By embedding these values throughout school life, we aim to nurture caring, thoughtful and resilient young people who are ready to contribute positively to their communities.
Democracy in Action – Visit from the Mayor of Warrington
During the Autumn term, when our focus was on the British Value of Democracy, we were delighted to welcome the Mayor of Warrington to our school. He spoke to the children about his role, the importance of democracy and how young people can make a difference in their community.
The Mayor also met with our School Council, giving them valuable advice about listening to others and making decisions to improve our school. This was a fantastic opportunity for pupils to see democracy in action.
The Rule of Law in Action – Visit from a Police Officer
During the Spring term, when our focus was on the British Value of the Rule of Law, we were pleased to welcome a police officer into school. He spoke to the children about his role and responsibilities, explaining how laws help to keep people safe and ensure fairness in society.
The children had the opportunity to ask questions and were excited to explore the police van, helping them to understand the Rule of Law through a real-life experience.
