History at St Andrew's

At St Andrew’s, our history curriculum aims to spark children’s curiosity and understanding of the lives of people in the past, including those who lived and worked locally. We want pupils to develop a strong sense of identity and cultural awareness through an appreciation of their historical heritage.

Our teaching helps children understand how past events have shaped the world today. Pupils are encouraged to investigate historical events, developing key skills in enquiry, analysis, interpretation and problem solving, while building a deeper understanding of the people, societies and choices that have influenced history.

How do we teach history?

At St Andrew’s, history teaching focuses on helping children think like historians. Pupils examine historical artefacts and primary sources, developing skills in analysis and interpretation.

We ensure history is engaging and personal through sensory experiences such as re-enactments, drama, role play, museum visits, and encounters with visitors. Personal stories are used to spark interest and bring the past to life.

Children are encouraged to understand that historical events can be interpreted in different ways and to ask thoughtful, probing questions about the information they encounter. Lessons are carefully planned to provide appropriate challenge for all pupils, ensuring that every child can develop their knowledge, skills, and understanding in history.
